All things EQ (week of 9/2-9/8): What have you already decided about your day? Have you ever noticed that even just a few minutes after waking up, you may have already decided how the rest of your day will go? What we expect to happen doesn't affect the things that actually happen. However, it does affect the way we experience and perceive what happens because we tend to interpret new information in a way that supports our pre-existing beliefs. For example, if we expect to have a bad day, we will likely inflate the bad aspects of our day while ignoring or diminishing the positive occurrences. "When you release expectations, you are free to enjoy things for what they are instead of what you think they should be." – Mandy Hale Knowing the influence of our expectations, the first thing we can do is identify and eliminate negative expectations. It makes no sense to search for something that we don't want to have, so it's equally absurd to let our brain try and find evidence to support a belief that isn't helpful. When we realize that we have negative expectations, we can replace them with more positive, helpful ones. How do we do that? If we have a negative belief, such as today will be boring, and we replace it with today will be awesome, we likely won't believe it. Instead, start by making small adjustments to your thinking, such as maybe today will be boring, but maybe it won't. While it doesn't sound like much of an improvement, it does make room for a better experience to happen. Remember, we often end up where we see ourselves going. Why not imagine a better destination? Give it a try because you deserve a great day. Danna Evans All Things, E.Q.
