All things E.Q. 1/13-1/17: Do you let others determine who you are, or do you decide for yourself? The best way to answer those questions is to notice when you alter your behavior because you think it will better please other people. Especially notice when the changes you make feel like they remove you from your true, authentic self. Human beings are naturally social beings, so it makes sense to feel the pull to fit in and please others. However, it is important for our students to know where the line is between going with the flow and being defined by the social norms and expectations of others. We want students to be proud of who they are and be able to stand up to unhealthy peer pressure. Helping our students understand that there are so many different kinds of people in the world, with different values and priorities, that it would be impossible to please everyone we know perfectly is what this week is about. It is possible, however, to be a unique individual who does not cave to unhealthy peer pressure while also being likable, respectful, and friendly towards others. This week we hope students can be kind to others, without being defined by others.
