All things E.Q. 10/21-10/25: Do you approve of yourself or must you seek approval from others? We all want approval. The difficulty with approval is the less we approve of ourselves, the more we feel a need to find it elsewhere. Getting approval from others, even successfully, puts our self-esteem in the hands of other people, who may stop providing it. When we put our happiness in the hands of others, it will never be in our control. Rather than depend on others, when we approve of ourselves, we always have that need filled. Self-approval allows us to form more genuine relationships with people because we are not asking them to provide us with our own self-worth. Of course, it can be hard to approve of ourselves sometimes. We will all face failures, embarrassment, and rejection. All of these are a part of life that we all have to deal with because no one is immune to life’s difficulties and challenges. In order to accept ourselves in the face of these difficulties, we must first accept the situation. Yes, we may have failed, and that failure is something that we will have to deal with, but it doesn’t mean that we are failures. We will be embarrassed, but we will not be embarrassments. When we can accept our situations for what they are, temporary, we give ourselves the opportunity to rise above them, and in doing so, we accept ourselves as we are. “True belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world. Our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance.” -Brené Brown Remember, self-acceptance does not require other people; it only requires your own permission.
