DVUSD News - ASU Students will Mentor DVMS Students in Colts Olympics Fitness Program

ASU students along pay a special visit to help mentor at-risk low income students at Deer Valley Middle School in the Deer Valley Unified School District to kick off new Colts Olympics Fitness Program on Thursday, May 10, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at 21100 N. 27th Ave.
ASU students will pair up with 7th and 8th graders to compete in groups to help educate, challenge, and encourage these at-risk students to develop leadership skills and positive attitudes using physical education group and individual activities including high jump, long jump, punt pass kick, shot put, advanced running programs and more. ASU students will speak to 7th and 8th graders about the importance of staying in school and going to college.
The Colts Olympics Program serves over 700 at-risk underserved students in grades 7-8 at Deer Valley Middle School, a Title I school. Most families are economically disadvantaged with close to 70% of students qualifying for free/reduced lunches. Students will participate in these activities throughout the year to prepare for an end of the year Colts Olympics Community Event where individual students, student teams, and family teams will compete.
