DVUSD Override Election
Official Results Not Yet Determined
Voters in Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) failed to pass the Maintenance and Operations Override election on Tuesday, November 2. Although not official, it appears the override was not approved by a narrow margin - 50.5% voting against the override compared to 49.5% in support of the override.
The district will need to wait for official results since there is only a difference of 439 votes between the yes and no votes (of almost 40,000 votes cast). Without the successful passage of this special election, the following $5.5 million in reductions will be necessary:
• 2% salary reduction for all employees • Increase class size by +1 student for every grade level • $200,000 from extracurricular activities • $200,000 support services staff • $164,000 from district department and school budgets
The next time the DVUSD Governing Board can call for a Maintenance and Operations Override Election is November, 2011. Should that election fail, the district would then need to reduce its 2012-13 budget by 5.5 million a year, each year for the next two years.
For on-going information about the 2011-12 budget development process, please go to Budget 411 on the district’s website, https://www.dvusd.org/budget411.
