Deer Valley Elementary Schools
Arrowhead Elementary
Arrowhead Student Council is sponsoring Spirit Week on May 17-21.
Arrowhead second grade will perform a variety of songs on May 11, during a school assembly and May 13 at 6 p.m. in the Media Purpose Room.
Arrowhead chorus and band students will be performing at an assembly on May 5 at 9:30 a.m. and the evening of May 6 at 6 pm for the parents and families in the Media Purpose Room.
Arrowhead families are invited to attend the Awards Assemblies on May 26 in the Media Purpose Room: Grades and times are listed below:
• 2nd Grade – 9:15 a.m.
• 4th Grade – 10:00 a.m.
• 5th Grade – 10:45 a.m.
• 6th Grade – 11:30 a.m.
Desert Winds
Desert Winds presents their new tuition based extended day for kindergartners. The Kindergarten Extended Enrichment Program (K.E.E.P.) is a whirlwind of exciting learning opportunities for our young students. The half day will focus on science, technology and math. Desert Winds encourages parents to K.E.E.P. their child excited about learning. For more information or a brochure, please call 623-445-3900. Space is limited.
Mirage Elementary
Baby chicks will be peeping out of the Mirage kindergarten classrooms near the end of the month as part of the life cycles/farm/science unit.
The advanced and beginning Mirage bands are ready for their Spring Concert on Thursday, April 29 in the cafeteria at 7 p.m.
New River Elementary
New River Elementary School in conjunction with the New River PTSA, recently hosted a KISS A PIG fundraiser. Each staff member created a PIGGY BANK - and students had the opportunity fill staff members’ piggy banks. The three staff members that raised the most money had to KISS A PIG on Friday, April 23. A total of $2,200 was raised. The money was used to help implement Core Knowledge in the k-3 classrooms next year with training and classroom supplies. Winning staff members were principal Tricia Graham, kindergarten teacher Michelle Warburton, and library clerk Elizabeth Medora.
Ronald McDonald recently visited the New River students in kindergarten through third grade. He shared the importance of reading through demonstrations, magic, and song. All of the children enjoyed Ronald’s visit and are now trying to practice what he taught them - especially how to read with excitement.
New River’s Kids at Hope Report Card Day is Wednesday, May 10. This is a day when students receive “report cards” that focus on talents and their future.
The annual New River Volunteer Luncheon was recently held. This was an opportunity for the teachers and staff of New River to thank the volunteers who contributed their time and talents to help students, teachers, and staff.

Stetson Hills will be hosting a health fair for its students on May 7 sponsored by the National Junior Honor Society. Students will be educated on a wide range of topics regarding physical, social, and emotional health/wellness by visiting ten different interactive booths.

Boulder Creek High School
Boulder Creek awarded six seniors the Certificate of Academic Distinction (CAD). Students are Briana Bohannon, Brittany Burgard, John McMullen, Daniela Panfil, Kevin Penkalski and Qianqian Zhang.
Boulder Creek men’s baseball team and girl’s softball team have both qualified for state playoffs.
Eleven Boulder Creek DECA students competed at the 2010 International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Louisville, Kentucky. ICDC is the capstone of the DECA year. At this conference, participants compete in one of DECA's competency–based competitive events. Top competitors in each event category are recognized for their outstanding achievements. The competitive events include an exam and role play presentations of responses to business and marketing scenarios.
The following students qualified at the state competition to advance to the international level in their respective event (students with an asterisk after their name received a competitive excellence certificate for their overall performance at DECA’s 2010 ICDC):

Placing as event finalists and receiving medallions for performance in a role play presentation were Nick Dietz in Business Services, Tyler Kopas in Retail Merchandising, Brian Singer in Food Marketing, and Claryn Tarleton in Marketing Management. After proceeding through the final round of competition, Brian Singer placed in the top ten overall in Food Marketing and Tyler Kopas placed first in Retail Merchandising.
BCHS Senior Class hosted its 4th Annual Mr. BC Male Pageant on April 29. This year’s charity was the Haiti Relief Fund. The 12 student contestants collected donations to raise money for this charity.
Sandra Day O’Connor High School
Three students from Sandra Day O’Connor’s Talon newspaper attended the Arizona Interscholastic Press Association’s Spring Recognition reception. The O’Connor Talon received nine awards including: Honorable Mention (HM) for news page design (Angela Yung and Savannah Thomas); HM for feature photo (Savannah Thomas); HM for review (Anna Freydenzon); HM for editorial (Savannah Thomas); Excellent (Savannah Thomas) and HM (Tarah Wells) for column writing; Excellent for individual in-depth reporting (Heajin Yu); Excellent (Heajin Yu); and HM for sports writing (Andrew Snider and Cletus Milan)
O’Connor senior Heajin Yu was honored as the state’s High School Journalist of the Year.
Last month, three of Sandra Day O'Connor's Advanced Interior Design students competed in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America state competition. O’Connor sophmore Amanda Holmes, junior Cori Jacks, and senior Ashley Wittke created a floor plan for a great room and a nursery. They also had to create a design board showing the two rooms' paint colors, furniture, and window dressings. The O'Connor design team received a ranking of gold, the highest FCCLA ranking possible, and chosen to be Arizona's state representatives at the national competition in Chicago.
Senior Ashley Wittke was also awarded a $3,000 scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in California.
