2010 DVUSD Earth Day Activities
Copper Creek:
Mrs. Coughlin's and Mrs. Guy's third grade classes are planning a celebration at Hillcrest Park with the City of Glendale.
Canyon Springs:
�2nd grade classes will be picking up trash, cleaning the sidewalks, recycling, and creating projects out of the recyclables that are collected. Also - creating poster advertisements that will be used to teach the younger classes about taking care of our earth and cleaning up the playground and outside the classroom and recycling the items found.
6th Grade is going to see Disney's Oceans to celebrate Earth Day, and will be learning about the Ocean Layers in science and discussing Ocean Life.
7th grade Career Exploration classes will be discussing "Green" jobs.
5th grade classes will be working on a different activity each day during science period.� List below are the activities:� Scholastic News article - Sharing our World: Discusses how to keep Earth safe for animals, focusing on 3 (elephants, polar bears and whales)
Scholastic News article - In Hot Water: Discusses the melting Arctic sea ice and how it is threatening Pacific Walruses
Scholastic News article - Don't Trash My Home: Discusses why recycling is still important 40 years after the first Earth Day
Watching the movie "Earth" and doing follow up activities.
Posting a bulletin board entitled Heal the Earth and having each student write how they can heal the Earth on a band aid cutout and gluing on their poster.�
Discussing the need to recycle paper by thinking about and counting the number of pieces of paper that we use and waste in a week.
Creating a log to chart each piece of trash thrown away in a day - what it is and how they disposed of it (trash, recycle, compost pile, etc.). Students will return to class the next day and discuss their logs in small groups.� What they threw away, how they could have done it differently, etc.
Desert Mountain:
Desert Mountain is having a Sonoran Desert Expo on April 29th, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. This Expo includes a science fair and is a kick off to celebrate the school's Sonoran Desert Studies 21st Century Project. The school will have its science fair and several displays that are related to projects on the Sonoran Desert. Desert animal will be displayed and the school habitat will be open. During the evening, a presentation on of the Sonoran Desert Studies Program will be in the Media Center. Students and their families are invited to bring telescopes and spend a half hour star gazing with at 7:30 p.m.
Desert Winds:
Kindergarten teachers Carolyn Blake�and Brandy Levy will be combining classes during science and social studies�to teach about recycling.� Kids are being asked to bring in items to recycle:
Monday-Plastic
Tuesday-Paper
Wednesday-Metal
On Thursday, classes are going to walk the campus and pick up trash.
On Friday, classes are going to make posters about recycling and enjoy some sort of green snack.
Highland Lakes:
The PTA and the Art Department at Highland Lakes�are planning an art contest to design posters for�the recycling program that�Highland�Lakes�will be doing next year.�
Tracy Brown�s kindergarten class will be decorating bags about recycling and then returning them to their local grocery store to use to send home groceries.
New River:

Tues. 20 *Magic Show about Water Conservation
Wed. 21 *Recycling Collection Day (like Hat Day), Plastics 1 & 2, Juice Pouches, Aluminum Cans, Plastic Bags, *Classroom Collection Competition Class with the most lbs. of recycling to get ice cream party.
Thurs. 22 *Assembly with Speaker from *Maricopa County Solid Waste Mgmt. Dept.
