WEST WING SCHOOL NEWS!!

2016-17 IMPORTANT DATES: 

MONDAY, AUGUST 8^TH:  Meet the Teacher Night / Open House

Kinder-3^rd  grades:      4:30pm – 5:15pm

4^th – 6^th   grades:         5:15pm – 6:00pm

7^th – 8^th grades:           6:00pm – 6:45pm

TUESDAY, AUGUST 9^TH:  Curriculum Night:

Kindergarten:       4:00pm – 4:45pm in the MPR

1^st Grade:               4:30pm – 5:15pm in the first grade classrooms

THURSDAY, AUGUST 25^TH:  Curriculum Night in the classrooms:

2^nd – 3^rd  grades:   4:30 – 5:30pm

4^th – 6^th grades:    5:30 – 6:30pm

7^th – 8^th grades:    6:30 – 7:30pm

THURSDAY, AUGUST 25^TH:  Math Presentation in the Media Center

2^nd – 3^rd grades:  4:00pm – 4:30pm

4^th – 5^th grades:  5:00pm – 5:30pm

THURSDAY, AUGUST 25^TH:  Volunteer Training in the Science Lab #324 (if you are a parent that plans to volunteer on campus or field trips)

4:00pm – 4:30pm

and

4:30pm – 5:00pm

Please follow these guides lines for student drop off/pick-up and walkers.

• Walkers:  gates don't open till 8:30am.
• Students buying Breakfast:  Front gate by the MPR is open at 8:15 allowing access.  Breakfast is only $1.25, which is a good option if they don't have time to eat at home.
• Students being dropped off/picked-up
  • ALL Drop off:  Gates open at 8:15am allowing parents to pull in and drop off breakfast students.  All other students are not allowed on campus until 8:30 when supervision starts.  
  •  Kindergarten students ONLY (siblings of kindergartner are OK for the same)  are dropped and picked up at the front curb near the Administration building.   
  • 1^st graders – 8^th graders are dropped and picked up using the driveway at the back of the school near the playgrounds.
  • ALL Pick up:  Gate opens at 3:15pm. There is no parking/waiting anywhere along High Desert Dr. before these gates open.  Consider coming 5 minutes after the bell rings when traffic congestion is lower.

Please be considerate and follow all directions of the crossing guards.  They are out there trying to keep all our students safe and we want them to be safe as well. 

DONATION FOR KINDERGARTEN:  Kindergarten is looking for small pop-up soccer goals and a small (short) basketball hoop.   If you are able to donate please drop it off at the front office or take it directly to one of the kindergarten teachers. 

PTSA WEBMASTER NEEDED:  Are you computer savvy?  PTSA is looking for someone to help with the PTSA website.   Contact them at executiveboard@westwingptsa.com if you are interested.  Training will be provided.   

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS COMPETITON 2016-17:  If you have a 5^th or 6^th grade student in the 2016-17 school year who is interested in joining the Battle of Books competition they can get a jump start by reading the stories that will be in the battle.   Registration will begin the first or second week of the new school year.   The books are:

SPECIFIC BOOK DONATIONS NEEDED:    The kindergarten through 8th grade teachers are currently learning a new writing curriculum called Lucy Calkins. This curriculum includes using several books to help students improve their writing skills. These books are used as examples to demonstrate a teaching point.  We are asking for your donation to help purchase these books, which will be kept in a special "teacher's only" section of our library and used during writing instruction by ALL teachers in the school.  Please consider purchasing some of the titles shown.  You can find low priced copies on AMAZON!  Your family's name will be on the donation sticker inside the book(s)!   Attached is the Google Doc link to view what is needed.   While in the Google Doc you have the capability to modify the information as you fill the need to ensure the list is kept current.  Please contact shari.mills-zumstein@dvusd.org if you need help or have questions about the list or how to work in Google Docs.    Google Doc Book List:   https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1qh74piaXLp2Qn66S8GFGaaZUzDyR5F1I6m3wA21I-2w/edit?usp=sharing

The Wellness Policy Committee wants to hear from you!

This policy was developed using a model policy from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and was modified by the DVUSD Wellness Policy Committee. Now we want input from YOU to make the policy the best it can be!

Adults - $3.50 (includes drink)

We are open for breakfast at 8:15-8:45 a.m.
