WEST WING SCHOOL NEWS!!

VOLLEYBALL TRYOUTS:   Tryouts are taking place Tuesday, August 18^th – Thursday, August 20^th with the roster being posted on Friday, August 21^st.   Tryouts will be held in our MPR room at 3:45pm.   Please come dressed to play and be sure to have your physical paperwork and permission slip with you.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS:  West Wing School is participating in a state wide competition called Battle of the Books.   5^th & 6^th graders (teams of 3 or less) will read 4 books in a 3-4 month period and then compete against other teams testing their knowledge about characters, plot, setting etc.   Winners of a school will go on to compete against other schools in the district and winners of that competition will compete against other schools in the state!   Students interested should pick up an application from the library OR visit the library website (Staff Websites / Library Media Center/Battle of the Books) and you can print off the forms from there!   If you have questions please contact:  shari.mills-zumstein@dvusd.org.    Applications and teams are due by August 28^th.

DAILY ANNOUNCEMENTS:  You can watch WW announcements anytime you want!!  We try to give as much detail as possible about functions and events going on around campus.  Simply go to the WW website and under the heading “ANNOUNCEMENTS” you will find all our announcements to date.  Did your child miss hearing their name mentioned on their birthday?   Just listen to that day's announcement.   Weekend birthdays are said on Friday.

2^ND GRADE – 8^TH GRADES ONLY:  Curriculum Night Thursday, August 20^th

2^nd, 3^rd & 4^th grades:  4:30-5:30pm

5th-6th: 5:30-6:30pm

7th-8th: 6:30-7:30pm

MATH PRESENTATION:  Thursday, August 20^th in the Media Center

2^nd-3^rd:  4:00-4:30pm

4^th-5^th: 5:00-5:30pm

VOLUNTEER TRAINING THURSDAY, AUGUST 20TH:  If you plan to attend a field trip or help anywhere on campus you must attend a training session.   There will be additional sessions at various locations around the district for the first few months of school.   Visit the DVUSD website for dates and locations or contact our front office.  West Wing will have a training session in Room# 324 at 3:30 pm and again at 4:00pm.

KINDER READINESS WORKSHOP STARTING AUGUST 19TH:   West Wing will be hosting  a three class Kinder-Readiness Workshop on our campus. This is a free workshop presented by DVFRC.  The workshop dates will be Aug 19th, 26th and Sept. 2nd from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on our campus.  The workshop is an adult/child, interactive 3 - part workshop series for parents or caregivers with children ages three to five years old.  Families of West Wing will receive first priority to register before the public fills the class.

STUDENT COUNCIL:  Attention enthusiastic 6^TH, 7^TH & 8^TH graders with a positive attitude!!!!!   Are you interested in joining student council – THE largest student club at WW?

If so, you can pick up a packet from:

6^th graders should pick up a packet in front of room #301

7^th & 8^th graders should pick up a packet from Mrs. Schubert @ lunch time.

All packets are due back by September 1^st.

COMING IN FROM OUR PTSA:  For our sponsors we have some great news, the Boosterthon t-shirt date has been extended and we still have a few spots open.  We would love to fill all the spots and have prices ranging from $250 - $750.  If you or anyone you know would be interested in supporting this event please have them call Michelle McCaughey at 602-791-2102 or you can respond to this email.  You can click here for the PTSA Website and find the t-shirt layout there.

***Sign up your whole family as PTSA members and be entered into a raffle for 4 Cardinals tickets.  We will be selecting the winner at our first PTSA meeting on August 27th.  Watch for the membership forms to come home this week.

WEST WING T-SHIRT SALE:  Our PTSA is taking WW t-shirt orders.  The cost is $10 and up depending on the size/style etc.   Order forms can be found at the front desk or on the PTSA website.  Orders are due by Friday, August 21^st.

WHO WANTS ICE CREAM!!?:  Take advantage of our first early release of the school year and cool off with some ice cream. Stop by the Cerreta’s Chocolate Connection on 83^rd Ave. & Lake Pleasant Parkway on Friday, August 21st between 12:00 and 3:00 and mention that you are with West Wing. They will generously be giving us 50% of the profits! Ice cream and chocolate are included.

EARLY RELEASE FRIDAY, AUGUST 21^ST:  All students dismissed at 12:05pm.

PTSA GENERAL MEETING: Our first general meeting will be at 6:30pm on Thursday, August 27^th in the MPR room.   Please plan to attend to hear all the wonderful plans we have for the school year.   The Cardinal tickets will be raffled off during this meeting for those who signed up their whole family as PTSA members!!

CAFETERIA  ****There will be a price increase for lunches in the 2015-16 school year.    Breakfast prices remain the same.

Elementary Lunch - $2.60

Adults - $3.50 (includes drink)

If you are like most parents of today, mornings are hectic and leave little or no time for breakfast.  The school breakfast program is a great solution to this common stressor in the morning and the cost is only $1.25.  We serve milk, juice, choice of cereal, bagel, whole wheat honey bun, oatmeal, and other choices as the menus change.

Children who eat breakfast:

Have a more positive attitude towards school

Perform better in school

Have improved nutrient intakes

Have a healthier body weight

Less likely to be tardy

Less likely to miss class

Improved math and reading scores

Fewer reported discipline problems

Breakfast supplies essential nutrients:

Calcium

Iron

B vitamins

When these nutrients are missed at breakfast they are typically not made up during the day.

Did you know that adults and children who regularly eat a CEREAL breakfast feel better in mind and body?  They have a healthier body weight and it is a lower calorie breakfast choice.

You are welcome to visit us at breakfast or lunch and eat with your children anytime.

We are open for breakfast at 8:15-8:45 a.m. Have a great school year!

Please follow these guides lines for student drop off/pick-up and walkers.

• Walkers:  gates don't open till 8:30am.
• Students buying Breakfast:  Front gate by the MPR is open at 8:15 allowing access.  Breakfast is only $1.25, which is a good option if they don't have time to eat at home.
• Students being dropped off/picked-up
  • Drop off:  Gates open at 8:15am allowing parents to pull in and drop off breakfast students.  All other students are not allowed  on campus till 8:30 when supervision starts.
  • Pick up:  Gate opens at 3:15pm. There is no parking/waiting anywhere along High Desert Dr. before these gates open.  Consider coming 5 minutes after the bell rings when traffic congestion is lower.

Please be considerate and follow all directions of the crossing guards.  They are out there trying to keep all our students safe and we want them to be safe as well.
