In June 2011, Highland Lakes School Science Teacher Lindsey Stegh studied at the UNESCO World Heritage site, Bahia de los Angeles on the Sea of Cortez. In this biosphere reserve, a group of educators worked to apply the fundamentals of field methods - such as capture/recapture, pitfall traps and line transects - to ecological questions and conservation practice.
This year Miss Stegh is one of more than 350 U.S. and international educators and graduate students selected to travel with the program from Miami University’s Project Dragonfly. At sites in 12 countries in Africa, Australia, Asia and the Americas, these educators will engage with international colleagues and scientists to work together to bring about local and global change. The program is based on Earth Expeditions from Dragonfly and the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.

Full Name: Meghan Schaiberger Title/Grade: 7th Grade Social Studies at West Wing School What: Meghan Schaiberger’s students were learning about the abolitionist movement so she dressed up as Harriet Beecher Stowe (Author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin). She answered students questions “in character” which allowed students to use higher level thinking skills to understand what this movement was all about. One of Ms. Schaiberger’s students said “It was so cool to have the historical figure we were learning about standing right in front of us!”
