New Terramar School Academy of Arts Opens
A DVUSD Choice Program

Terramar School in the Deer Valley Unified School District will open its new Academy of Arts, Monday, August 15 (accepting open enrollment year-round). Students will learn first-hand from acclaimed instructors using arts instruction integrated with the academics program to learn math, science, reading, writing, social studies, and the full range of 21st century skills in the classroom. This program will introduce students to music, band, dance, drama, and art classes at an early age.

All specialty classes are taught by acclaimed instructors with extensive experience in their fields. Students will have the opportunity to learn from and train with these professional experts on a daily basis. They are:

• David Kuhns, All-State Band conductor with teaching experience at elementary, junior high, high school, and college levels

• Lynda Clyde, a classically trained, lyric soprano opera singer who performed with Operafestival di Roma, an opera company based in Rome, Italy and other notable places

• Rebeka Lowe, a professional flute performer and published author and composer

• Tracy Grace, a fine arts expert with an emphasis in interior design who facilitates a professional learning community of elementary art educators

Other program components include:

Guest Artists – The Guest Artist Program offers students the opportunity to study, observe, and work with professional artists-in-residence. The program invites numerous guest artists such as composers, choreographers, dancers, and more.

Annual Art-Related Field Trips
- Each year, students in grades 6-8 will have the opportunity to visit premiere art venues such as the Getty Museum, Los Angeles Museum of Art, Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles Theater, Disney Performing Arts Workshops, and locally organized trips to the Phoenix Art Museum, Musical Instrument Museum, Broadway plays, and concerts.

Arts Track and e-portfolios
- Students in grades 5-8 will begin an arts track and develop e-portfolios that include 12 to 20 works of art showing a variety of skills such as drawing, painting, and basic design.
Music Conservatory-Master Classes - Free after school music conservatory-master classes will be offered to all band students in brass, woodwinds, and percussion. Students will develop a high level of musical training using small group instruction and mentoring.

Keyboarding Lab - All students will learn about piano and learn to play the piano using a keyboarding music delivery model.

Special Events – Students will participate in an end of the year drama production (Wizard of Oz for 2011-12), annual talent show, arts nights, and stagecraft. In 2012, students can participate in the Deer Valley Community Education’s Theatre Rocks Summer Camp, a fun-filled experience in theatre where students in grades 1-8 learn acting, singing, dancing, and improvisation skills from experienced instructors.
