Copper Creek
Copper Creek Art teacher Mrs. Soule along with her students made a banner for Relay for Life of Deer Valley held May 6. This is significant for Copper Creek as this banner, which is very along has a message with a "hope" quote on it and a special message for its principal, Mr. Fineberg, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy.
On May 3rd, Copper Creek's first grade classes invited families to come tour their habitats and see projects completed by Copper Creek students. Each classroom became an expert on a different habitat. Mrs. Jergenson's class studied the Grasslands, Mrs. Hawkin's class did the Taiga, Mrs. Perry's class become experts on the Tundra, Mrs. Farmer's class studied the Rainforest and Mrs. Worthington's class became marine biologists as they studied the Ocean.
Each student chose an animal to learn about. They did research and were able to choose how they wanted to present their information. Some students created posters, some made brochures, others created cereal boxes, and some even chose to make power points. As a home connection, students created a diorama that included their animal, vegetation, and a water source. The project was a huge success. The first grade classrooms were visited by the students of Copper Creek during the day and over 300 family and friends of first graders in the evening. Families were able to see projects in all the classrooms while enjoying lemonade and animal crackers.
New River
The third annual staff vs. fifth grade softball game recently took place at New River. The staff continued their winning streak by winning 8-7. The teams were cheered on by all the students and in the school and well as s few parent fans.
Fourth grade has traveled through time and space. The year began by exploring the forces that mold earth. At the same time the continents were explored to discover just where the United States is on the planet. Learning continued with a stop in Europe during the Middle Ages. While in that time period Africa and China were studied and the students learned about the origin of Islam. Fourth grade has also studied the relationship of the American colonies with King George and Britain. As fourth graders studied why the colonies chose to become the independent states of America the students also learned about Paul Revere’s Ride. The students have also explored electricity and water. The respiratory system and circulatory system were also areas of study. Fourth grade has done all this while working on computer skills, by creating their own Smart board presentations, speaking and performing before their peers, mastering not only multiplication, but also division, and learning about fractions, writing summaries and journaling.
It has been a busy and productive year.
