DVUSD Expands Services for Gifted Students New Middle School Program Begins 2011-12

PHOENIX, Ariz. – May 19, 2011 – The Deer Valley Unified School District will be offering new gifted programs to qualifying students beginning 2011-12. The following programs will be made available to expand services to students who want advanced offerings in grades 7-8 at Highland Lakes School, Deer Valley, Desert Sky and Hillcrest Middle Schools:

• 7th grade Honors Social Studies

• 7th grade Honors Science

• 8th grade Honors Social Studies

• 8th grade Honors Science

• 7th and 8th grade Spanish (offered after school at Hillcrest Middle only)

The district will continue to offer 7th and 8th grade Honors Language Arts at all K-8 and middle schools.

A Deer Valley Gifted Services Committee was created to meet the needs of the gifted student population by reviewing current policies, procedures and practices of the gifted services program. The committee was made up of principals, teachers, and parents who represented a variety of grades and locations within the district. The committee used the National Association of Gifted Children Programming Standards to evaluate the current program and make recommendations for program improvement in the areas of assessment, curriculum planning and instruction, learning environments, and programming.

Other program changes to be developed this fall include creating a comprehensive assessment matrix for identification of gifted students; offering enrichment opportunities such as Future Problem Solving and Odyssey of the Mind Academic competitions; increasing opportunity for the development of advanced oral and written skills, creative expression, and fluency with technologies in curriculum offerings; and providing professional development support and adequate funding to sustain a variety of programs and services.
