Mandarin Chinese Project Celebrates New Confucius Classrooms Public Invited to Attend Celebration!

PHOENIX, Ariz. – April 27, 2011 – The Deer Valley Unified School District will be hosting a grand opening celebration of the Confucius Classrooms at Diamond Canyon and Gavilan Peak Schools and Boulder Creek High School on Friday, May 6, 7 p.m. in the Boulder Creek Auditorium located at 40404 N. Gavilan Peak Parkway in Anthem. The event is open to the community and will include student cultural skit, songs, drum, ribbon and dragon dance performances, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and an after-event reception.

These schools (a network of schools known as the Mandarin Project) join an elite network of 369 Confucius Classrooms in 96 countries that are providing high-quality Mandarin language education to its students. The Confucius Classroom program provides additional funding that allows teachers to develop curriculum and purchase supplies for the school language programs.

In partnership with Arizona State University’s Confucius Classroom and Chinese Flagship program, the Mandarin Project provides Deer Valley students with an articulated Mandarin language experience from kindergarten through 12th grade and beyond. Students at Diamond Canyon and Gavilan Peak receive 45 minutes of weekly instruction in Mandarin language and culture. Boulder Creek High School will offer Mandarin in the 2011-12 school year with plans to offer an Advanced Placement Mandarin course in the near future. Gavilan Peak also houses a Mandarin Partial-Immersion program in which students spend 50% of their school day being taught Arizona State Curriculum Standards completely in Mandarin.
