Friday, April 8, Canyon Springs hosted a spring carnival organized and supported by the PTSA. Parents and teachers manned the booths as families enjoyed jumping inflatable’s, a giant slide, dunking booth, pie throwing, and games, hotdogs, popcorn and soft drinks. The carnival was a huge success and raised $3,092 which will be used to purchase technology for the school.

Desert Sage 5th grade teacher, Jennifer Domkus, has been selected by the National Council of Teacher in Mathematics (NCTM) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) to attend the 2011 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy at the Liberty Science Center, in Jersey City, NJ, for one week beginning July 17, 2011.  At the Academy, Mrs. Domkus will learn innovative ways to capture and excite students in math and science, build expertise in facilitating student learning through problem solving and inquiry, and network with other involved in grades 3-5 mathematics and science education.

Makenzie Coates, 5th Grade Desert Sage student, was the overall winner of the 8-11 age category for the 2011 Children’s Mental Health Awareness Poster Contest.  Winning artwork will be displayed at a celebration to be held on May 5 (Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day) where winner will receive a prize and a certificate of recognition and honor.

NFL player Jon Weeks, of the Houston Texans, recently visited with Desert Sage students.  During his visit, Jon spoke about his time as a student at Desert Sage and the importance of maintaining good grades and making education a priority.  Jon also addressed bullying and stressed the importance of good character.   Later, he demonstrated “long snapping” for the students as well.  Many students requested autographs, and Jon graciously consented.

Desert Sage recently held its annual Spring Festival.  Student, friends and family members enjoyed an evening of food and fun.  This fundraising event for the PTSA was not only fun, but a great success.

Principal Crain awarded recognition medals to grades 3-6 grade students who exceeded on AIMS for 2009-2010. The “Exceeds in AIMS” program awards students with a medal for each section of the AIMS test in which they received an “exceeding” score.

Mrs. Shiroda and Mrs. Wertz kindergarten classrooms have been hatching chicks.  Students were able to watch and care for the eggs while waiting for them to hatch.  Students learn vocabulary and terminology, as well as keeping life cycle logs, and interesting “chick facts.”

Highland Lakes

On Friday, April 8, Heather Anderson, Miss Utah USA 2007 came to Highland Lakes and presented a very special assembly to the students on drug abuse prevention.  The entire student body was enthralled in her story.   You could hear a pin drop as Miss Anderson told the students how she said "NO" to drugs and alcohol and as a result was able to achieve many great accomplishments in her life. Miss Anderson made a difference in the student’s lives.

Elementary students at Highland Lakes attended a Character Assembly on April 8.  This month’s character trait was "Caring".  Many students were honored and received rewards.

On April 27 elementary students at Highland Lakes will take part in a very exciting design contest!   The first annual "TAKE THE CAKE" design contest will be held and the creative juices will flow as students have 60 minutes to decorate their cake.   The entries are sure to be fabulous!   Stay tuned for pictures to follow!
