Sierra Verde Principal Cherryl Paul Named
2011 AzTEA Administrator of the Year
Sierra Verde principal Cherryl Paul in the Deer Valley Unified School District has been named 2011 Administrator of the Year by the Arizona Technology in Education Association (AzTEA). Mrs. Paul was presented with an award at a school-wide assembly on Wednesday, March 8 by AzTEA representatives Lillian Hritz and LeeAnn Lindsey. Mrs. Paul was nominated by the DVUSD Administration and school staff. As the AzTEA award recipient she will now compete for the Outstanding Leadership Award for the International Society for Technology in Education.
As principal of Sierra Verde, the first Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Academy (STEM) in the district, student scores, enrollment, and engagement have increased by providing students with technology-use opportunities including STEM labs; interactive science notebooks; data collection and analysis; internet research, video conference, create interactive chat bots, and engage in computer animation with sister schools around the nation. Other opportunities include STEM focused clubs such as Claymation (clay animation movie-making), Journey Inside the Computer Club (taking apart computer hardware), and Engineering Club.
With Mrs. Paul’s leadership, Sierra Verde has earned an esteemed label of Excelling for six consecutive years; is a recipient of the 2010 A+ School of Excellence Award, DVUSD Superintendent’s School of Excellence Award, DVUSD Red Carpet Customer Service Award; and winner of the AZFamily News Channel 3 WeatherBug Contest (criteria included a student-made video about weather forecasting), receiving a free $10,000 WeatherBug station program; as well as receiving over $50,000 in grant funding for technology and STEM initiatives from national and state organizations such as Motorola and Arizona Technology in Education Alliance.
DVUSD Superintendent Dr. John Kriekard said, “Mrs. Paul is known as one of the most dedicated principals in the district. She is always focused on continuous improvement of programs and services to benefit all students.”
Each year the AzTEA selects one administrator to receive this award on a state level. The candidate is nominated by fellow staff members and depicts very specific characteristics. The chosen candidate models an understanding of the social, ethical, and legal issues and responsibilities related to our evolving culture and promote learning environments in which digital citizenship is valued and respected along with other important characteristics.
