BOARD APPOINTMENT COMMENTARY
By Ann Ordway, President
Deer Valley Unified School District Governing Board

The future of Arizona could very well be in your hands. Deer Valley School District is looking for someone interested in making a local investment in our future leaders and workforce of tomorrow – a school board member. The most rewarding job I’ve ever had other than “parent” is serving the families, students, and employees of the Deer Valley School District.

Being a school board member is as American as red, white, and blue and apple pie. It is a unique experience that is at the heart of every community throughout our nation. Many remember that “teacher” that helped you believe in yourself. Our DVUSD schools provide high quality experiences that influence students’ lives forever! Public Schools ensure each and every child the opportunities to “learn” dreams into realities.

School board members serve in voluntary positions with huge responsibilities for setting the vision for the district. Together, with your fellow board members, employees, students and community, you will collaborate to align goals and resources, hire the superintendent, approve curriculum, adopt school calendars, and equally important, you will serve as ambassador to the greater community.

If I’ve enticed you thus far, believe in student-centered decision making, you are a resident within the DVUSD boundaries for one year or longer, and over the age of 18, you might want to check out the web sites of the Arizona School Board Association, http://www.asba.org and the Maricopa County Schools Office at http://www.maricopa.gov/schools. These are two great resources to answer many of your questions.

If you are interested in filling this board vacancy, please visit the district’s website at http://www.dvusd.org or by picking up a nomination packet at the district office. The deadline for applications is Friday, March 4 at 1 p.m. If you are not interested in the position but you are interested in being involved in the outcome, please plan to attend a Community Forum and Feedback Session with the candidates at 8 p.m. on March 7, the DVUSD District Office, 20402 N. 15th Avenue. Or if you like to follow along, and are unable to participate in person, applicants’ profiles and updates will be posted on the district’s web site.

Our Maricopa County Schools Superintendent, Don Covey has set a process for board appointments. A Collaboration Team, comprised of the Governing Board President, Superintendent, and Teachers Association President will meet to review the applications, use the rating cards from the Public forum and then select three nominees to recommend to the Maricopa County School Superintendent’s Office by March 10.

All candidates welcome. You will have the time of your life…and make the difference in the lifetimes of many!

The Deer Valley School District is a PreK-12 award winning and excelling school district. More than 35,000 students are enrolled in our 36 campuses taught and supported by 4,000 employees.
