Those Amazing Kindergarteners!

There probably is no more exciting time in a parent’s life than when it is time to send their 5 year olds to “big kid” school. Now as a grandparent of a two and one-half year old granddaughter who already knows how to use a computer mouse, remote control, and load a DVD, I am more in tune than ever before with meeting the education needs of today’s kindergarteners.

Since coming to Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD), I am convinced that amazing kindergarteners need amazing programs. And that’s what you will find here in DVUSD. Our academic success proves that 90% of more than 2,000 kindergarteners were reading and writing at age level by the end of the year. And we don’t make apologies for our rigorous learning environment offered at all schools. But select schools also offer Core Knowledge, Aerospace, and Mandarin Chinese.

Even 5 year olds come to school with technology habits already under their belts. So DVUSD has equipped our kindergarten classrooms with new and cutting edge technology such as SMART boards, document cameras, and flip cameras to challenge tech-savvy minds.

Hands-on projects are still as important as they were in preschool but we’ve stepped up the activities and integrated them into highly focused curriculum designed to prepare them for first grade. Our extended day Kindergarten programs use the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum.

Keeping your children safe is important to you and each of our schools has been redesigned with that purpose in mind. You will note the safeguards once you visit one of our schools. And to many parents who work, knowing that their children are in the care of nurturing adults and surrounded by the familiarity of their own school and friends without the worries of special transportation is an important aspect for selecting a school where before and after school care is offered.
