Arrowhead
Arrowhead Student Council is promoting the program, Pennies for Peace, which is a program that supports education and literacy programs in the remote mountain regions of Central Asia. Our donations will help purchase pencils, paper, books and other necessary supplies to help provide these children with an education and a better chance in life. This school-wide effort will collect coins (not just pennies) for 4 weeks beginning January 10 - Feb 4.
 
Arrowhead will hold their annual Reflections Fair event on the evening of Jan 19 from 6-8pm in the school cafeteria. This years' theme of "Together We Can" will be reflected in visual arts, musical composition, dance/choreography, film production, photography and literature by our many multi-talented students. Please join us for this celebration of the arts.
 
Canyon Springs
Hats off to kindergarten teacher Sheila Fields who was awarded a DVEF grant in the amount of $250 for math materials for an upcoming Kindergarten “Cookie Math Night” that corresponds with the “if You Give a Mouse a Cookie” field trip.
 
Congratulations to some of our outstanding chorus members. These students were selected by a state committee to perform in the Arizona All State Choruses on March 12. They will travel to Higley High School, practice all day and then perform in the afternoon with over 100 vocalists from around Arizona at their grade level. The students selected for the Sixth Grade All State Chorus were: Isis Horton, Katianna Morgan, Tyler Rensmeyer and Nika Reynolds. The Seventh and Eighth Grade All State Chorus members chosen from Canyon Springs are Mikayla Combs, Kaylee Miller, Tyler Pham, Alex Smith and Tori Spitzke. Way to go vocalists. Our chorus students are directed by our wonderful choir director, Ms Jill Campbell.
 
The 14 OUTSTANDING artists for grades 1-7 (2 chosen per grade) for 2nd quarter who consistently created excellent artwork with extra effort plus positive character are:

Each student received a sketch book and certificate of achievement at the 2nd quarter awards assembly. Canyon Springs art program is directed by our talented art teacher, Dee Dee Daus.
Character Counts. Each month two students from each class showing good character are nominated for a “Character Counts” award. Students are treated to a short party where frozen treats are served and then they receive a certificate at the end of the quarter assembly. Constitution
Congratulations to second quarter bike winners Ivan Ochoa from Mrs.Martinez’ class and Lesley Huerta from Mrs.Lankford’s class Each quarter, Jeanne Getz from Horace Mann Co. donates a bicycle or iPod Shuffle to two lucky Constitution students. 
 
Spelling BeeConstitution Elementary held its annual spelling bee on January 5. The first place winner was Gold Carbonell from Mrs. Lamp's class, and the second place winner was Alyssa McElhenyfrom Mrs. Marcus' class.  Gold will participate in the District Spelling Bee on Tuesday, January 18.
 
Student of the Month and Pillar Pride recipients for the month of November were recognized in December with cookies and juice with Principal, Stephanie Tennille, and a special certificate. Student of the Month is awarded based on academics, and Pillar Pride is awarded based on character.

Diamond Canyon
Diamond Canyon is hosting a Food Drive until January 21 which is sponsored by the Diamond Canyon National Junior Honor Society. Items collected will go to the Foothills Food Bank in Cave Creek. The Diamond Canyon PTSA hosts “Restaurant Day” at Barros Pizza in Anthem on Tuesday, January 25th. Mention you are with Diamond Canyon that day and 20 percent of the proceeds from your order will go to Diamond Canyon School. Offer applies to dine-in and take-out only orders only.
 
New River           
Ned, The “Yoyo” man is coming to New River School. Parents are welcome to attend the assembly at 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, January 18. The mission is to encourage and inspire students everywhere. The belief is there is a champion in every kid.

The NED Show promotes academic achievement and character development by teaching three critical skills that will benefit kids for a lifetime: Never Give Up, Encourage Others, and Do Your Best.
 
New River welcomes Michelle Zorger, their new Preschool teacher.
 
 
Park Meadows           
Preschool students in Ronna Colbert and Kelli Ford’s classes had been studying a unit on weather. Students were read stories to with buddy classes about winter, as well as learning weather words: snow, sled, hot, cold and learned all about different types of winter clothing. As a culminating activity to the weeklong thematic unit, 10 tons of snow was trucked in for students to experience a true snow day. Students also delighted in a cup of hot coco and cookies.
 
Congratulations to sixth-grade student Tammy Tran in Mike Vacha’s class who is the winner of the school Spelling Bee. Tammy will represent Park Meadows in the district spelling bee January 18.
 
The Library Media Center is hosting Mayan Life: Source and Symbol, a three-panel, freestanding exhibit that features bilingual exhibits from the work of Guatemalan artist Nicolas Reanda. Accompanying the exhibit is a hands-on table that allows students to touch some of the textiles seen in the paintings.
 
Sierra Verde
Congratulations go to 7th grade student Shea Tanner and 8th grade student Veronica Larned for earning Sierra Verde’s 2nd Quarter Character Counts Award. These fine young ladies displayed the pillars of character through their kind and thoughtful actions toward others throughout the second quarter.
 
The Mountain Ridge Honors Choir visited Sierra Verde’s campus for a 30 minute performance on Thursday, January 6. Audience members were wowed by the talented singing and choreography displayed by the choir students. Thank you Jamie Showers for organizing this assembly.
 
Sierra Verde teachers focus on developing STEM across content areas. Thursday, January 6 teachers were engaged in discussing next year’s STEM Weather theme. The theme of weather will be embedded across all content areas. Sierra Verde will be utilizing the AZFamily Channel 3 WeatherBug Station and Delta Education Science curriculum to enhance instruction. 
 
On Tuesday, January 4, fourth graders at Sierra Verde School were visited by Ms. Sam, an environmentalist at the Arizona Game and Fish Department. The purpose of her visit was to educate students about the Arizona Game and Fish Department and the animals they take care of. Students were able to observe and learn about a Great Horned Owl, tortoise and a snake. A student in Mrs. Orr’s class, was asked to simulate what dessert survival to replicate adaptations animals utilize to stay alive.
 
Congratulations to all the students who participated in the Geography Bee on Friday, January. Jared Rice 7th grade, Priti Yadav 7th grade, Noah Green 7th grade, Devin French 7th grade, Joseph Carravetta 7th grade, Arun Yadav 6th grade, Madelaine Khosti 8th grade, Zach Ray 5th grade, Shadi Ali 5th grade Arun Yadav was the winner and Joseph Carravetta was the runner up. All the student representatives showed off their geography knowledge by answering many difficult questions. Thank you, Mrs. Nuckolls and Mr. Dugan for organizing the event.
 
West Wing
West Wing invites the community to attend its upcoming "Showcase for Learning" night (January 19th grades 5-8) and (January 26th grades K-4) time: 5:00-6:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. Both nights will showcase the types of exciting rigorous academic learning that is going on at West Wing School.
 
West Wing School has been an "Excelling" school since 2006 and this night will give the community an opportunity to see first hand the effective academic programs we provide at West Wing School. Each grade level will showcase their strong academic focus and emphasize student generated work. West Wing choir and band will be performing.

THE ERINN KNAK MILE, Saturday February 5 @ 9:00 a.m., O’CONNOR HIGH SCHOOL TRACK, 25250 N 35th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85083.
 
There will be several different mile races (4 laps around the track). Each race will have a time range. The race will start with the walkers and get faster each race. Sign up for the races will be the morning of. The entry fee is $10.00.
