Constitution
Student of the Month and Pillar Pride recipients for the month of October were recognized with cookies and juice with Principal Stephanie Tennille and a special certificate. Student of the Month is awarded based on academics and Pillar Pride is awarded based on character.

Constitution will be hosting a Literacy Night on December 7 from 5-7p.m. The theme will be "Celebrating Diversity through Literature."
Fourth grade students at Constitution will be taking a field trip to the Pioneer Museum on December 3.
Constitution will be hosting their first annual one-mile Reindeer Run/Walk on Saturday, December 4 at 9a.m. Raffle tickets are being sold for a chance to win sports equipment and toys. Proceeds will go directly to the P.E. department to be used for equipment. The winning ticket will be drawn during the Reindeer Run.
Diamond Canyon
Nine Diamond Canyon singers were selected to attend the State Honor Choir for 6th grade and junior high. Selected students for 6th grade State Honor Choir are: Megan Austin, Riley Garner, Mariana Hidalgo, Tya Kuzov, and Eleanor Parrish. Junior High selected students are: Chyeanna Anderson, Sammi Gadberry, Meredith Mrok, and Jordan Seaver.
The students will join other students from all over the state of Arizona to rehearse and put together a concert at Higley Center for the Performing Arts in Gilbert on March 2011.
The sounds of the holidays can be heard around the band room as the Advanced Band is preparing for their Winter Concert which will be on Monday, December 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Diamond Canyon multipurpose room. Music will be presented by band and choir students in 7th and 8th grade.
Congratulations to the 7th and 8th grade band members for a fine performance in the Anthem Veterans Day Parade.
The Beginning Band and 6th grade Band will perform on Monday, December 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Diamond Canyon multipurpose room. This concert will feature the two bands and the Youth Choir. These students have been working hard and are anxious to perform. This will be the first appearance for our new group of beginners.

Hillcrest
Hillcrest Middle School students competed in the school Spelling Bee on November 19. The first place winner was seventh grader Sara Hileman and the winning word was cinematographer. The runner-up was eighth grader Jacob Evans. Sara will now compete in the DVUSD District Spelling Bee in January.
Hillcrest students competed against one another in each of their language arts classes in order to make it to the school Spelling Bee. Contestants went through a vigorous fourteen rounds of spelling words. Their were a total of fifteen contestants which included: Seth Ashley, Kelsey Banales, Aida Bell, Bhavana Bellamkonda, Amber Campman, Gabe Dominguez, Megan Duk, Ashley Elitz, Jacob Evans, Sara Hileman, Kohner Kirwan, Alex Roth, Maddy Ruby, Frankie Tedesco, and Rachel Valint.
Legend Springs
The P.E. Dept. will be holding a rubber duck race for Juvenile Diabetes in the creek in front of the school fight against Juvenile Diabetes. For every $10 collected, one duck will be entered in the race for that student.
Race prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each grade level. Students get to keep their ducks at the end of the race on Wednesday, November 24. The students are collecting donations from family and friends to help in the support.
Congratulations to Ms. White’s 6th grade chorus students who auditioned and were nominated and accepted to the 2010-11 AMEA All-State Choir: Kayla Smith-Soprano, Cameron Burnett-Alto, Jordan Grantham-Soprano, Nikolas Librizzi-Alto, Sarah McMahon-Soprano, Elyse Pelton-Alto, Maya Perez-Soprano, and Kaiti Zendejas-Alto.
Legend Springs Chat and Chew Book Club had its first meeting on Monday and 12 kids joined to read the book “Among the Hidden” written by Margaret Haddix. This is the first in her series The Shadow Children. Chat and Chew members will be reading all seven books.
Mountain Shadows
Mrs. Marklund's first grade class has been busy studying pumpkins this past week. Each student brought in a small pumpkin and throughout the week, students completed many math activities which included measuring the circumference, weighing and graphing results.
Mountain Shadows was recently spotlighted in a district board meeting. Student Council presented all of the great activities happening at the school with a school video that included the kids at hope pledge, the tunnel of hope, presentations, and more.
New River
Author C. A. Goody visited the New River library on November 15. Students enjoyed listening to the author speak about the writing and editing and how her pets inspired her Charlie the Cat series. Her stories helped get kids excited about reading and checking out from the library. Goody also read an excerpt from one of her books and shared details on her next book, which will be coming out in the spring. We can’t wait to host her again!
The students and staff were treated to the annual “Sixth Grade versus the Staff Volleyball Game.” It was a hard fought battle with the staff winning two games and the sixth grade one. Everyone showed great sportsmanship and had a good time. Thank you to Coach Cathy Dudzinski for planning this great event.
Students and their families were treated to a “Thanksgiving” feast a lunch on Thursday, November 18. This is a long standing tradition that is enjoyed by the students and their guests.
New River Elementary Choir had a very successful trip to the Mountain Ridge High School Choir Festival where they performed and received an Excellent Rating. The students had the chance to see the MRHS choir and two other elementary/junior high choirs perform. New River's choir has worked very hard to become a group that achieves great things.
Sixth graders continued their Astronomy endeavors by visiting the Challenger Space Museum to complete “Spaced Out Challenge of the Apollo” mission. It was a great interactive field trip and full of simulations.
New River remembered the veterans with a Flag Ceremony. The entire school met in the Fire Lane and joined to say the Pledge of Allegiance and a brief discussion of what a veteran is. The choir also shared one of their songs.
Park Meadows
Sherri Odom’s first-grade students have been learning about pumpkins. Students estimated, measured, weighed, counted seeds, and graphed pumpkin information as they discovered their findings. The class planted their seeds in soil, learning about the life cycle from seed to pumpkin plant and excited to see plants growing taller while journaling each day about the changes they observed.
Betsy Hale, Dena Mills, and Sherri Odom’s first-grade students attended the Children’s Museum of Phoenix. Exhibits provide fun, enjoyable, multi-sensory experiences for every child. As students investigate the hands-on exhibits, teachers will encourage questioning skills on how everyday objects are utilized which meet Arizona State Standards.
Sierra Verde
The kindergarten students at Sierra Verde went on a field trip to Tolmachoff Farm in Glendale on Tuesday November 9. The students attended a classroom in a corn maze where they learned how corn is used in so many of our everyday products, picked vegetables, and ate ice cream.
Sierra Verde's 5th grade students had the inspiring opportunity to learn the true meaning of thankfulness and strength on Monday, November 15. Special speaker Jazmine Ramos, an 8th grade student attending Sierra Verde spoke to younger students about her three year battle with bone cancer. The students were truly inspired by Jazmine's story.
Sardella's Pizza Night was a huge success. Thank you to all the community members who came out in support of Sierra Verde by choosing Sardella's as their dinner option on Wednesday night. Thank you to the teachers who participated in the pizza eating and box folding contests.
Deer Valley High Schools
Barry Goldwater
Joseph Cross (4.5) placed 6th among the top 48 chess players in the state at the AIA State Individual Chess Tournament held at Blue Ridge High School in Pinetop. Other team members who placed were: Yaro Pilipenko (3.0) finished 18th in the championship section and Joel Southwick (5.0) placed 4th among 64 players in the alternate section. Additional chess players that participated were: Ian Hackett (3.5), Cameron Oman (3.5), Alex Fuentes (3.0), Jason Franklin (3.0), Keith Confer (2.0), and Damien Charley (1.0).
Led by teacher Mr. Stempneiwski, this season the chess team placed in the following competitions:
• 2nd in Region II competition
• 3rd at the 2010 AIA Team Chess Invitational
• 3rd at the 2010 AIA State Team Chess Tournament
The Region II Individual Qualifiers included:
• Joseph Cross placed 1st
• Yaro Pilipenko placed 3rd
• Ethan Morgan placed 4th
The club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:30-5 p.m. for any student interested in joining.
Deer Valley
Congratulations to Deer Valley High School's Drama Club for being awarded Gold Honor Troupe at the Thespian Festival. The award is for productions, school involvement and community service.
Mountain Ridge
The MRHS Spiritline qualified to go to the AIA State Championships which will be held on February 5, 2011 in Prescott Valley.
The Pom Team did the best they ever have in state and placed 4th out of 20 teams. The All-Girl Stunt Group placed 8th and Show Cheer placed 2nd out of 32 teams.
MRHS students competed and earned several awards at the DVUSD Academic Decathalon competition on November 20. Student winners included: Hansen Qiu (1st place in math), Mira Tipirneni (1st place in interview) and Neha Reddy (3rd place social studies).
