Around Our Schools - 9-14-09

Desert Winds
DVUSD Community Education Drivers Education program features 30 hours of classroom instruction and four hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. Two weekday sessions will be offered on Mondays and Tuesdays at Desert Winds Elementary School located at 19825 North 15th Avenue, Phoenix. Cost for Drivers Education class is $295. The sessions are listed below:

First session: September 28th � December 7th, 6-9 p.m. Second session: September 29th � December 1st, 6-9 p.m.

Class requirements are students must be at least 15 years, six months of age, and have a valid driving permit in order to receive behind-the-wheel training. One-hundred percent attendance is required in order to receive the Driver Education Certificate. Class space is limited. Diamond Canyon
Diamond Canyon will be hosting its second Annual Expo on Saturday, October 3rd from 9 a.m. � 1p.m. in the school parking lot. Local businesses affiliated with Diamond Canyon groups, staff, and families will be displaying their merchandise for the general public. A variety of products will be on display, including hats, candles, jewelry, and scrapbook items.

Legend Springs
Legend Springs will be hosting Dow Kump, Arizona Author of children's books, on Friday, September 18th.

Legend Springs six grade students are going on their yearly Outdoor Education Trip to the YMCA Sky-Y Camp in Prescott, Arizona from September 30th � October 1st. Students will engage in many hands on science activities, learn team building, confidence building, and survival skills.

Mrs. Luensman's 3rd grade class will be participating in a pen pal writing project this month with students from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Students will share facts about their state, climate, industries and personal interest.

New River
New River students participated in Good Deed Day on September 11th by donating canned food goods to the Foothills Food Bank.

New River students elected new student council officers for the 2009-10 school year. New officers are: Fiona Billingsley (President); Sierra Kacozocha and Tori Irwin (Vice Presidents); Madison Downen (Treasurer); and Riley Miller (Secretary).

Paseo Hills
Paseo Hills is honoring National Constitution Day on Thursday, September 17. Students will gather in the Amphitheater wearing red, white and blue. The school�s 7th and 8th grade band and chorus will perform the National Anthem. History Club students will be in charge of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and the Declaration of Independence.

Paseo Hills has been selected to participate in the International Walk to School Day this fall. There will be a pre-assembly on September 22nd to share information with students. The actual Walk to School Day will be on the morning of Monday, October 5th. Students, faculty and parents will be walking to school at 8:00 a.m. from Motorcycle Mechanics Institute located on Deer Valley Road near the school.

Sierra Verde
Sierra Verde was awarded two grants from the Wells Fargo Teacher Partner Program. The funds were used to purchase guitars for a new exploratory class offered to middle school students attending Sierra Verde.

Sandra Day O�Connor
Sandra Day O�Connor High Schools students Megan Best, Jared Bowers, Nathan Kalish, and Michael Weingartner received the AP Scholar with Distinction Award. This award is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
