Around Our Schools - September 2, 2009

Deer Valley Elementary Schools

Diamond Canyon
Diamond Canyon Kindergarten is having a Grandparent's Day Celebration to honor Grandparents on Friday, September 18th, 10 a.m. The celebration will begin in the grandchild's classroom and will follow with lunch in the cafeteria. The cafeteria will be serving spaghetti, salad, and breadsticks for the price of a school lunch - $2.50. If Grandparents live far away and are unable to attend, parents will be allowed to participate so that each child has someone in attendance. For those attending the lunch, please RSVP with payment by Wednesday, September 9th in the front office located at 40004 N. Liberty Bell in Anthem.

Gavilan Peak
Gavilan Peak principal Mai-Lon Wong has been named the 2009 Arizona Distinguished Administrator of the Year sponsored by the Arizona School Administrator�s Association.

New River
New River received donated school supplies from the New River Kiwansis Club. These supplies will be given to students in need throughout the year.

Sierra Verde
Sierra Verde students will be celebrating International Day of Peace on Monday, September 21st by planting pinwheels outside the school around the flagpole area. All students will have the opportunity to create pinwheels of all sizes and as part of the creation process, they can write their thoughts about war and peace, tolerance, and living in harmony with others. Students can also draw and color on the back sides of their pinwheels to visually express their feelings.

Pinwheels for Peace is an art and literacy installation project started in 2005 as a way for students to express their feelings about what is going on with the world and in their lives. Since its inception people in over 2, 4000 locations throughout the world �planted� approximately a million pinwheels in public places in their communities, spreading thoughts and feelings about peace throughout the country and the world.

Sierra Verde students Connor Rochon and Cory Burk are members of the Arrowhead Allstars baseball team who won the 2009 Arizona State Little League Championships this year. The team received Best Sportsmanship Award for integrity and character by the Arizona Little League Association. The team represented Arizona at the Western Region Tournament in California but lost to a Southern California team who moved on to play in the Little League World Series.

Deer Valley Middle Schools

Desert Sky Middle
Desert Sky�s National Junior Honor Society will be hosting a car wash on Saturday, September 26th from 10 a.m. � 1 p.m. on school campus located at 5130 W. Grovers in Glendale. Donations will be accepted.

Dollarhide Financial has donated $1,000 to Desert Sky students. The funds will be used to recognize four outstanding students in the area of math during each quarter with $50 gift cards. Funds were obtained by math teacher Staci Bolley.

Danielle Belliveau, Desert Sky Middle band teacher, was awarded a $3,000 grant for a Brass Residency from the Glendale City Council. The funds will be used for a series of brass workshops for band students.

Deer Valley High Schools

Barry Goldwater
The Barry Goldwater High School spirit line team was presented with three awards at the Arizona Summer Cheer Camp at Northern Arizona University this summer. Awards are listed below: Junior Varsity � 2nd place in mini competition Varsity � Superior Overall Award
BGHS � Traditions Award (presented to the school with most spirit and leadership on and off the field)

Boulder Creek
Juliette Baldwin, Boulder Creek math teacher, has been selected as a state finalist for the National Presidential Award for Excellence by the National Science Foundation. Winners will be announced this summer.

Boulder Creek will be hosting a casting call for MTV�s MADE show on Monday, September 21st, 2:30 p.m. in the mini auditorium. The casting call is open to Boulder Creek students only.

Boulder Creek is offering a new Career Technical Education (CTE) course in Engineering to students. A new Engineering instructor, Joseph DiSilvestro, was hired to teach the new course to students in grades 9-12. High school students will be able to explore various technological systems and manufacturing processes while applying math and science concepts used to create and solve engineering projects.

As a hands-on project, students will construct and program robotic models in order to demonstrate engineering concepts. By the end of the class each will student will explore engineering fields; develop logical reasoning skills; establish the engineering connection through activities and exercises; and emphasize, study, extend, and practice engineering skills. Sandra Day O�Connor
Sandra Day O�Connor will be hosting a special visit from a village elder from Uganda, Africa on Friday, September 18th whose village and orphanage/school was the recipient of last year�s �Change for Change� Campaign. Last year the Superintendent�s Student Advisory Council, a group of 30 students in grades 8-12, created and implemented a service learning project, �Change for Change.� The �Change for Change� Campaign was a coin collection to benefit Water for our World, a non-profit dedicated to addressing the issue of making clean water accessible.

�Change for Change� was extremely successful and together DVUSD raised $46,022.15 to build three wells in an orphanage/school in Uganda, Africa. These wells now provide clean water for hundreds of children and community members in the village. The special visitor will be visiting advisory students to eat lunch and thank them for all they are doing at Sandra Day O�Connor High School.
