Deer Valley Elementary Schools

Arrowhead Elementary
The DVUSD Community Education Department will be offering Pre-kindergarten at Arrowhead for 2009-2010. Registration will take place on Saturday, February 28 from 8 a.m. � noon at the District Office located on 20402 N. 15th Ave, Phoenix 85027. Gates open at 7:30 a.m. A $40 non-refundable registration fee is due at the time of registrations. Tuition is $255 per month for half day and $540 per month for full day. Canyon Springs

The DVUSD Community Education Department will be offering Spring Break Day Camps from March 16-20, 6:30 a.m. � 6:00 p.m. at Diamond Canyon. The fee is $25 per child per day with a 10% discount for additional siblings and $40 registration fee for new enrollees. Daily and weekly attendance options are available. Children in grades K-8 will participate in exciting activities including group sports, outdoor play, board games, and fun crafts in a safe, supervised program. Snacks are provided by the day camp but campers must bring a sack lunch each day.

Gavilan Peak
Gavilan Peak will be hosting �Kindergarten Round-Up Orientation and Registration Night� on Thursday, March 12 at 6 p.m. Gavilan Peak is located on 2701 W. Memorial Drive, Anthem 85086. For more information call 623-445-7400.

Greenbrier Elementary

Highland Lakes
Sixth grader Michael Haarmann placed second at the Regional Spelling Bee. He will be participating in the State Spelling Bee in next month. Michael has won the spelling bee at Highland Lakes for three years in a row.

Members of the Shriner's Club came into first grade classrooms and talked with them about the American Flag�s history. They learned about the American Flag�s significance and meaning. Each student received their own flag to take home. Flags were waving as the students proudly held their flag high.

New River
The students at New River had the opportunity to attend a Diversity/Anti-Bully Program assembly presented by motivational speaker Mark Trombino last week. This program teaches students about good character while incorporating the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

The students in grades K-2 met with children�s author Gary Metivier last week. The newscaster/author from Iowa read to the students and answered questions about his books. The children had the opportunity to purchase copies of Metivier�s books to read on their own.

Norterra Canyon

Deer Valley High Schools

Barry Goldwater
Seniors Jared Kirschner and Brennan Vincent have been selected as candidates for the United States Presidential Scholars Program. This program recognizes the nation�s most distinguished graduating seniors. Every year up to 141 students are chosen based on their academic achievement from among outstanding graduating seniors to become Presidential Scholars. This is one of the nation�s highest honors for high school students.

Sophomore Virgil McArthur has been named the Arizona Representative for the National Epilepsy Foundation. He will be representing Arizona at the National Epilepsy Foundation in Washington, D.C. on March 27.

Social Studies teacher Kathleen Szcepaniak has been selected as the KNIX & Fulton Homes �Teacher of the Week.� She was nominated by student Romina Abbas.

Boulder Creek
The DVUSD Community Education Department will be offering Preschool and Pre-kindergarten programs at Boulder Creek for 2009-2010. Deer Valley
All DVUSD students are participating in the �Change for Change� coin collection drive this month, with Water for Our World, to build a well that will provide clean water to over 1300 villagers in Africa. MidFirst Bank has committed to matching the first $1,000.00 collected by all students and will be bringing their coin counting truck to count all the change collected on Friday, March 6, 10:45 a.m at Deer Valley High School in front of the gym. Some of our students will be involved with this process. Deer Valley HS is located on 18424 N. 51st Ave., Glendale 85308.

Mountain Ridge

Sandra Day O�Connor
The State Academic Decathlon will be held this year on Friday and Saturday, March 6 - 7, at Sandra Day O'Connor High School. The only event that is open to the public, including media, is the Super Quiz Relay which is from 1 to 3 p.m. in the gym on Saturday, March 7.

The premier academic competition for high school students is designed to include students from all academic abilities and achievement levels. Teams consist of nine members, who are divided in three categories based on grade point average who compete in ten academic events including art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, mathematics, music, science, speech, and super quiz (evolutionary biology). Forty teams from around AZ will compete to make nationals. O'Connor is located on 25250 N. 35th Ave., Phoenix 85083.
