CAMPUS GOAL
By May of 2018 we will decrease the total percentage of D/F’s in literacy and math school wide by 25% (from May of 2017 percentages) as evidenced by a score of four or better on the end of course level of achievement marks.

FALL FESTIVITIES
Students, if you plan to dress up at school on Tuesday, please remember that all costumes must adhere to the district dress code policy. You may not wear masks or full face paint. Spiders, black cats, ghosts, or gory themes are not allowed. Please have fun but make sure you are school appropriate!
CONVERSATIONS WITH CURT
On Thursday, November 2nd from noon to 1:00 pm, Dr. Curtis Finch, the Superintendent of the Deer Valley Unified School District will be on our campus hosting his "Conversations with Curt" community forum in the Media Center. Staff, parents, and community members are invited to share ideas and discuss crucial issues. We invite you to meet Dr. Finch and share the greatness within Barry Goldwater and the Deer Valley Unified School District.

Athletic Clearance Packets need to be completed and turned in to the Athletic Office by October 27th for students planning to tryout for a Winter Sport. Winter Tryouts begin on October 30th. Please stop by the Athletic Office for details.
***Think you got what it takes? Goldwater Women’s Basketball tryouts are less than 2 weeks away!!! Tryouts are 4 days; October 30th through November 2nd from 3pm to 5pm for all skill levels. Remember you cannot participate in tryouts without a physical and a completed athletic packet. If you need a packet, stop by the Athletic Office. We want to see you ladies bring you’re a-game, positive attitude, hustle. For additional information, see our flyers posted in your classrooms and chat with of any of the returning Lady Bulldogs. Mens Basketball Tryouts will be held November 1st through November 7th. Freshmen will be at 3 pm in the Practice Gym. Sophomores through Seniors will tryout at 5 pm in the Main Gym. Please make sure your Athletic Clearance packets have been turned in to the Athletic Office PRIOR to the first day of tryouts. Please speak with the Athletic Office for more details.
Women’s Soccer tryouts are quickly approaching. If you are planning to try out this year, you will need to turn in a completed athletic packet by October 26th. Tryouts will begin on October 30th. See Coach Rodriguez in the counseling office or Coach Arnold in Room 117 for more information.
Hype Squad shirts are now available in the bookstore for $10 before school, after school or during your lunch. Wear your Hype Squad shirt and bring your school ID to any home game and your entry fee will be only $1. We now have large sized shirts available!

BGHS offers peer tutoring for all subjects in the media center after school from 2:17-3:15. Tutoring days will vary week by week so check the printed calendar on the library doors to see what days tutoring is offered.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recognize students who have made meaningful contributions to their communities through community service. One student from BGHS will be nominated to receive the President's Volunteer Service Award and will become eligible to win an award of $1000 or more and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C. for four days of special recognition events. Apply at http://spirit.prudential.com or www.nassp.org/spirit and deliver the certification page to Mr. Rodriguez in the counseling office by November 6, 2017.
The Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Program’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. The Arizona Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar (HOBY) will be held this summer. BGHS may nominate sophomores to attend the seminar. If interested, please sign up in the counseling office by Friday October 27th.
Seniors.. do you (and your parents) need help filling out your application for financial aid (FAFSA)? Pick up a College Goal AZ flyer from your social studies teacher or from the counseling office to learn how and where you can attend a free FAFSA completion workshop.
Seniors: If you plan to attend community college next year, but need some help getting started, this event is for you. Maricopa Community Colleges and City of Phoenix’s My Brother’s Keeper is hosting a college-wide career and resource fair on Saturday, October 28th at Phoenix College, 1202 W. Thomas Rd., from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. for high school students and opportunity youth. This event was created to help high school students, opportunity youth, and their families learn about career opportunities available to them and to learn about resources available to help a student be successful. Pick up a flyer in the counseling office.
University of Arizona College of Engineering will be hosting two Engineering Preview Night at the UA Phoenix Biomedical Campus featuring a college overview, breakout sessions and a question and answer session with one of their deans. Fall 2017 Phoenix Preview Nights are scheduled for October 19 and November 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. Please email Leslie Grignon at lgrignon@email.arizona.edu, to RSVP or for any questions.
Phoenix Chinese Week will be offering three $750 scholarships to seniors who meet their criteria. The deadline to apply is January 29, 2018. See your counselor for more questions or for an application.
The Deer Valley Education Foundation is partnering with the BHHS Legacy Foundation to provide scholarships for students interested in pursuing a career in the Health Care field. Students must be a junior or senior in DVUSD. The scholarship covers part or all of the costs for dual enrollment classes, AP or IB exam fees, or certain CTE or West-Mec programs. See your counselor for an application or for more information.
CLUBS
Photography club is having a Photo Booth during both lunches near the 500 hall! From October 23rd through October 27th you can get a Polaroid photo for only $1. That money will be donated to BCRF, Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Pose, and picture a cure for breast cancer!

Students, Staff, Families, and Community – You can help BGHS up to $2500 from The Shops at Norterra through the Earn & Learn Program!
It’s easy! Every time you shop, dine, enjoy services or see a movie at The Shops at Norterra, between now and March 31st, simply submit your receipts online at www.shopandlog.com/norterra. Our school earns TEN POINTS for every dollar spent. There are many opportunities for Bonus points too! The more points we earn the higher our cash grant will be!

STUDENT INFORMATION
Dress Code: Any attire that detracts from the learning environment is not acceptable. Shirts and tops may not expose bare midriffs, bare shoulders, nor be deeply cut in the front, back or under the arms. Undergarments should not be exposed. Clothing must cover the entire buttocks. Clothing may not include defamatory writing obscene language or include symbols of drugs, sex, or alcohol. You can see the complete dress code policy in the Student’s Rights and Responsibilities Handbook on our website. Please dress for success while at school!
Parking Permits: The cost for student parking on campus for the 2017-2018 school year is $100. Students who wish to park on campus may purchase a parking permit in the bookstore during their lunch period or before or after school. Beginning August 14, 2017 students who have not purchased a permit will not be allowed to park their vehicle on the BGHS campus.
FROM THE CAFETERIA: Students must reapply for the free/reduced meal program every school year. If your application has not been received and approved by September 19th, you will go to full pay status. You will be responsible for your meal payments. Submit paper applications to the cafeteria or on line applications at ezmealapp.com. Please allow 10 days for processing.
Senior students, please remember to reapply for your Free and Reduced lunch program for the 2017/2018 school year even if you have a shortened schedule. Qualifying for the Free and Reduced lunch program may also help you with testing fees and the athletic waiver.
DELIVERIES: The front desk will not accept personal items such as IPads, cell phones, money or lunches. There are also no deliveries allowed for students such as balloons, flowers, food or gifts of any kind.
Parking
Students, please be a good neighbor and do not park in the Medical Plaza or neighboring business parking lots. Your car will be towed! You can purchase a pass for the student parking lot in the Bookstore.
