Dorrance Scholarship Seniors, it's not too late to apply for the Dorrance Scholarship. This scholarship program provides academic and financial support to first-generation college students planning to attend one of the 3 in-state universities. The deadline to apply is February 7, 2020, but your FAFSA must be submitted by January 15th. See your counselor for more information.

Kindness calendar: A month of showing what it means to be a Jag! Jan 10 ~ Make a list of things you're grateful for. Jan 13 ~ Tell a parent how much you love them. Jan 14 ~ Make a new friend waiting in line. Jan 15 ~ Be a shoulder to lean on for someone you care about. Jan 16 ~ Pay for the person behind you. Jan 17 ~ Give as many genuine compliments as you can. Jan 20 ~ Help out your community & volunteer somewhere. Jan 21 ~ Donate books or clothes to a shelter. Jan 22 ~ Choose to give the gift of forgiveness. Jan 23 ~ Spend time outside in nature. Jan 24 ~ Reconnect with a family member or friend. Jan 27 ~ Write or send a thank you note to someone. Jan 28 ~ Turn off distractions and spend quality time with someone. Jan 29 ~ Clean up after your lunch table. Jan 30 ~ Tell a teacher how much you appreciate them. Jan 31 ~ Do something kind for yourself.

Senior Panoramic Picture and Cap & Gown Pictures: Can you add Seniors Panoramic picture on January 29th during FIRST PERIOD in the main gym. Cap and Gown pictures (optional) in the Auditorium Lobby (during Lunches). Men wear or bring a shirt and tie. Ladies wear something V-neck.

Interested in Playing a Sport in College? Athletes and Parents: If you are interested in playing a sport in college listen up! Experts in college recruiting are coming to BCHS to talk about what it takes to play at the next level. Come to the auditorium on January 29th at 6 pm to learn the secrets of getting a college scholarship. It's all about who you know. If you have any questions talk to Mr. Larsen in the office.

Boys Volleyball Open Gym & Try-out information: Boys Volleyball: The Boys Volleyball team will be hosting open gyms in the auxiliary gym, from 2:30-4:30 pm. There are 4 in January, on the 14th, 16th, 21st, 28th, and the 31st. In February there are 2, on the 4th & 7th. The open gyms are free to everyone, regardless of playing experience. Tryouts will be held in the auxiliary gym from February 10th-14th, from 2:30-5:00 pm. Make sure to have your physical packets turned in to the office. If you have any questions about the upcoming season, please reach out to Taylor Stallman.

ASVAB Testing: ASVAB-CEP Testing: Are you interested in identifying your career strengths and receiving an inventory assessment and feedback? Or are you interested in the possibility of joining the military after high school? If you are a junior or senior, consider taking the ASVAB-CEP (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery-Career Exploration Program) on Tuesday, Feb. 11th from 7:30 am – 11:30 am. Please sign up for the ASVAB Test in the counseling office by 2/7.

Library News: Blender Animation Class at the LibraryWednesday, January 29 at 3:30 pm Description: Do you use Blender or are you interested in finding out more about this 3D animation tool? Then sign up for our Blender class. In this month’s class, students will explore methods in low-poly object creation, lighting scenes, physics simulations, and particle systems. At the end of this course, students will have completed a city utilizing all of these components. Stop by the library to sign up.

Community Conversation: Deer Valley Unified School District will once again be hosting a Community Conversation centered on the topic of suicide awareness and social and emotional learning. Led by nationally known expert Dr. Max McGee and his group of presenters, members of our school community can expect an informative and lively presentation about a wide range of issues that students in our society face today. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer period with Dr. McGee, his presenters, and DVUSD district administrators. Please join us in the Sandra Day O’Connor High School Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, February 5th at 7 pm. We expect the presentation to last an hour with the question and answer period to follow. We believe anyone who has any interest in youth in our society will benefit from attendance. Those who attended last year reported that it was one of the most meaningful and informative presentations they had seen. We hope to see you there.

ASU Flex time February 6: Seniors, have you been accepted to ASU and are wondering what to do next or have questions for the admissions representative? If so join ASU during FLEX time on February 6th. You can sign up under counseling.

Officiating Game Opportunities: If you are a Junior or a Senior with an interest in baseball/softball and would like to officiate for our freshman/JV teams, please come see Mr. Larsen or Ms. Jen in Athletics no later then January 31st.

Pre-season Track practice: Pre-season Track practices are starting Monday, January 27th. Sprinters and jumpers are practicing Monday-Friday at 4 pm on the track. Middle and Long distance practices are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday at 4 pm on the track. Official practices start February 10th at 3pm.

Attentions Freshman: Freshmen- Are you interested in attending a four-year college or university? If so join the counseling for the first freshmen college workshop during FLEX time this week, January 30!

Spring Sport Try-outs: Spring Sports Try-outs are just around the corner if you are unsure if you are cleared for try-outs, please see Ms. Jen in Athletics by February 7th.

All things E.Q. 1/27-1/31: Confusion does not mean failure, quitting does. When students feel confused, they often want to give up because they feel incapable of continuing. They equate confusion with ability. We want students to equate confusion with learning. Learning and problem-solving often require the ability to work through confusion. Confusion can be a normal part of the learning process. When students understand that, they handle confusion better, feel less frustrated and are less likely to give up. Confusion does not mean failure, quitting does. Confusion simply means we are learning, or doing something new!

Arizona students and chaperoning faculty are invited to participate in the Construction Science Technology Apprenticeship Fair where exhibitors will be showcasing their open apprenticeship and job opportunities. The Apprenticeship Fair is free for students and chaperoning faculty and those who attend will receive a complimentary ticket to the afternoon's Arizona Diamondbacks game v. the Giants. The fair begins at 8:00 AM on April 1, 2020. One ticket per student or chaperoning faculty. Participants must attend the fair to receive a ticket to the game.

Arizona Girls and Boys Program: ATTENTION JUNIORS! Arizona Girls and Boys State Program is hosting a week-long unique summertime educational program for high school juniors that focuses on participation and personal experience in a model state, complete with governmental bodies and elected public officials. Interested students please pick-up and complete a student nomination application from the counseling office. Applications are due for the girls by Feb 18th and boys by the Mar 17th.
